I finally found mamey sapote at the fruit stand by the Marcy JMZ stop. It was $4/pound and it tastes like acorn squash and cherimoya but it feels like avocado in your mouth. You can’t really tell how big it is from the picture, but it was about the size of a Tommy Atkins mango.
The vendor told me they were from Santo Domingo and that they lower cholesterol, combat balding, and raise sperm count.
The giant seed inside was really beautiful and I’m going to try and get it to germinate.
